Overview

 

Suriname is a founding member of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). As with all IDB shareholders, Suriname appoints a Governor to represent the country on the IDB Board of Governors.

At the IDB Headquarters in Washington, D.C., Suriname is represented on the Board of Executive Directors. This position is shared with Brazil and is held by an Executive Director elected to a three-year term by the Governors of Suriname and Brazil.

Strategy and Projects

The IDB Group’s Country Strategy for Suriname (2021-2025) is designed to support the restoration of macroeconomic sustainability, boost private sector competitiveness, and enhance basic services and social protection. 

This strategy focuses on:

  1. Restoring Macroeconomic Sustainability: Enhancing public expenditure management and reinforcing public administration while safeguarding the social safety net.
  2. Promoting Private Sector Competitiveness: Fostering a more competitive private sector to drive economic growth and job creation.
  3. Improving Basic Services and Social Protection: Strengthening access to essential services and social safety nets to support vulnerable populations.

Longer-term priorities include advancing private sector development, accelerating digitalization, improving financial inclusion, and reinforcing social protection systems to ensure sustained progress and stability.

Country strategies remain valid for one year beyond the stated period, as they remain active throughout the preparation of the following strategy.
